Brussels, October 01, 2024 – The Europe Today: A series of events unfolded in Brussels on Tuesday to mark the leadership transition at NATO, as Jens Stoltenberg stepped down from his role after nearly a decade of service. The former Secretary-General, who led the alliance since 2014, handed over the reins to former Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte.
The transition began with a symbolic handshake and wreath-laying ceremony at NATO headquarters, followed by an official meeting with ambassadors from the North Atlantic Council to confirm Rutte’s appointment as the new Secretary-General.
In his farewell remarks, Stoltenberg expressed confidence in Rutte’s leadership, stating that the alliance was in “safe hands.” Stoltenberg’s leadership coincided with critical global events, including Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014, marking a defining moment in his tenure.
Rutte expressed his gratitude for the trust placed in him by NATO members. “It is a big job, and I have big shoes to fill,” he acknowledged. Rutte steps into the role as NATO faces evolving security challenges, continuing the legacy of Stoltenberg, whose tenure is second only to that of Dutch diplomat Joseph Luns, who served as Secretary-General for 12 years.
