Azerbaijan Urges Armenia to Fulfill International Obligations on Missing Persons

Baku, February 6, 2025 – The Europe Today: Azerbaijan has reiterated its call for Armenia to comply with international legal obligations regarding prisoners of war, missing persons, and hostages from the First Karabakh War.

In a recent statement, Azerbaijan’s Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman), Sabina Aliyeva, emphasized that Armenia has persistently failed to provide Azerbaijan with crucial information on these individuals despite repeated appeals over the past three decades.

Aliyeva highlighted ongoing efforts to identify human remains discovered in mass graves across Azerbaijan’s liberated territories. To date, forensic investigations have confirmed the identities of nearly 170 Azerbaijani citizens, with the identification process still underway.

“We believe that Armenia must fulfill its obligations under the international treaties to which it is a party, not hide information about the fate of our compatriots, and provide accurate information about the burial sites of the murdered persons,” the Ombudsman stated.

The issue of missing persons remains a significant humanitarian concern between the two nations. Azerbaijan continues to call on Armenia to disclose information on the fate of missing Azerbaijani nationals and to cooperate in accordance with international human rights standards.
