UNODC Regional Representative Oliver Stolpe Meets with Uzbek Senate Speaker to Strengthen Cooperation

Tashkent, February 7, 2025 – The Europe Today: Oliver Stolpe, the Regional Representative of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) for Afghanistan, Central Asia, Iran, and Pakistan, paid an official visit to the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

During a meeting with Senate Speaker Tanzila Narbayeva, both sides acknowledged the significant progress in Uzbekistan’s cooperation with UNODC, particularly in combating drug trafficking, organized transnational crime, human trafficking, and terrorism. The discussions also emphasized the crucial role of parliament in ensuring human rights, promoting gender equality, improving labor conditions, and strengthening anti-corruption measures.

Senate Speaker Narbayeva highlighted Uzbekistan’s achievements in establishing a strong legal framework to combat corruption, which has gained international recognition. The country has also made notable progress in tackling human trafficking, eliminating forced labor, and addressing the challenges faced by migrants abroad, leading to improvements in global rankings related to these issues.

The meeting further explored opportunities to enhance cooperation in leveraging modern information technologies for crime prevention and law enforcement. Both parties expressed commitment to deepening collaboration in these areas to bolster regional security and uphold the rule of law.

Stolpe’s visit underscored UNODC’s continued engagement with Uzbekistan in addressing key security challenges and advancing shared objectives in crime prevention and justice reform.
