Tashkent, April 12, 2025 – The Europe Today: The Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan welcomed Jean-Philippe Brochu, Clerk Assistant of the Canadian House of Commons, for a high-level meeting aimed at strengthening inter-parliamentary ties and fostering bilateral cooperation.
During the meeting, Uzbek officials presented a comprehensive overview of the structure and operations of the Legislative Chamber, highlighting the roles of political factions, committees, and commissions in the legislative process. The dialogue focused on institutional functions, democratic engagement, and the country’s ongoing reform efforts.
Canadian Acknowledgment of Reforms
Brochu expressed strong appreciation for the democratic reforms initiated in recent years under the leadership of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, noting the positive international recognition of Uzbekistan’s evolving political landscape.
He also commended Uzbekistan for its successful hosting of the 150th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly — the first time the event has been held in Central Asia. Brochu praised the forum’s organization and emphasized that the initiatives proposed by President Mirziyoyev during the summit were aligned with global parliamentary priorities.
Cultural Engagement and Continued Cooperation
“This is my first visit to Uzbekistan. The dynamics of socio-economic transformations and the results of large-scale reforms implemented in your country have attracted the world community’s attention,” said Brochu. He added that he looks forward to visiting the historical cities of Samarkand and Bukhara, further deepening his understanding of Uzbekistan’s rich cultural heritage.
The meeting concluded with both sides agreeing to establish a regular dialogue between their parliamentary institutions and enhance practical cooperation. The commitment aims to deepen inter-parliamentary engagement, promote knowledge sharing, and contribute to stronger Uzbekistan-Canada relations at the legislative level.
