Sharm el-Sheikh, October 14, 2025 – The Europe Today: US President Donald Trump on Monday stated that his Turkish counterpart, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, could play a significant role in ending the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One while returning to the White House from Egypt, Trump was asked whether world leaders, particularly Erdogan, could assist in resolving the conflict. He replied, “Erdogan can.”
Trump highlighted Erdogan’s influence with Russia, adding, “He’s respected by Russia. Ukraine, I can’t tell you about, but he is respected by [Russian President Vladimir] Putin.”
Earlier on Monday, Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi hosted more than 20 world leaders, including President Erdogan, at the Egyptian resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a summit centered on signing a Gaza ceasefire agreement.
Speaking about his relationship with Erdogan, Trump remarked that he gets along with the “tough ones,” indicating a strong personal rapport between the two leaders.
Türkiye has been actively working to end the Russia-Ukraine war, which began in February 2022. Ankara has consistently urged Kyiv and Moscow to resolve their differences through negotiations and remains ready to facilitate initiatives, including mediation, to establish the foundations for lasting peace.
