Tehran, February 27, 2026 – The Europe Today: Turkmenistan’s initiative aimed at strengthening economic cooperation among member states received support during a meeting of the Council of Permanent Representatives of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) held on Feb. 25, 2026, in Tehran, according to the Foreign Ministry of Turkmenistan.

The ministry stated on Thursday that the ECO Secretariat has been tasked with preparing a draft plan for the practical implementation of Turkmenistan’s proposals, marking a significant step toward advancing regional economic integration.

During the meeting, participants also reviewed a technical and economic assessment concerning the establishment of joint trade zones within the ECO region. The initiative, originally proposed by President Serdar Berdimuhamedov of Turkmenistan, was formally included on the meeting’s agenda.

According to the report, expanding trade among ECO member states requires the active utilization of border and regional trade potential. Emphasis was placed on creating a favorable cross-border environment and strengthening regional cooperation based on mutually agreed preferences and priority sectors.

The discussions form part of broader efforts within the organization to enhance collaboration across various sectors. Previously, Tehran hosted the fourth meeting of ECO interior ministers on Oct. 28, 2025, underscoring continued engagement among member states on regional cooperation initiatives.
