Rabat, March 9, 2026 – The Europe Today: Morocco is participating in the 70th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70), scheduled to take place from March 9 to 19, 2026, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, reaffirming its commitment to advancing women’s rights and gender equality.
The meeting follows the global observance of International Women’s Day, which highlights the importance of promoting women’s rights, equality and justice worldwide.
According to Morocco’s Ministry of Solidarity, Social Integration and Family, the country’s participation reflects its firm commitment to promoting women’s rights and strengthening the values of dignity, equality and non-discrimination.
In preparation for the session, the ministry held a coordination meeting on February 24, bringing together representatives from government institutions, the legislative branch and civil society organizations to finalize arrangements for Morocco’s participation.
The meeting focused on consolidating relevant data and strengthening organizational and logistical preparations to ensure Morocco’s participation remains coherent, effective and aligned with its national and international commitments to gender equality and women’s empowerment.
Role of the Commission on the Status of Women
The United Nations Commission on the Status of Women is the principal global intergovernmental body dedicated to advancing gender equality and empowering women.
Established by the United Nations Economic and Social Council in 1946, the commission has played a vital role in developing international standards on women’s rights and monitoring progress at national, regional and global levels.
This year’s session will focus on the priority theme of ensuring and strengthening access to justice for all women and girls, including promoting inclusive and equitable legal systems, eliminating discriminatory laws and policies, and addressing structural barriers that hinder equality.
In a statement marking the occasion, António Guterres emphasized that this year’s International Women’s Day centers on rights, action and justice for all women and girls.
“By fighting discriminatory laws and practices — and defending the progress already achieved — we can ensure the dignity, opportunity and freedom all women deserve,” he said.
Morocco’s Progress on Women’s Rights
Morocco has made significant strides toward advancing gender equality through both national legal reforms and international commitments.
The country’s 2011 Constitution enshrines equality between men and women and prohibits discrimination, establishing a constitutional foundation for strengthening women’s rights across all sectors of society.
In recent years, Morocco has also introduced reforms, including ongoing revisions to the Moroccan Family Code (Moudawana), aimed at promoting greater equality within family law.
At the institutional level, Morocco has established several mechanisms to coordinate gender equality policies, including the National Committee for Gender Equality and the Advancement of Women, which oversees strategic frameworks such as the Government Plan for Equality 2023–2026.
Morocco has also strengthened cooperation with international partners, signing agreements with UN Women and United Nations Population Fund to integrate gender equality into public policies and align national legislation with international human rights standards.
