Hanoi, April 29, 2026 – The Europe Today: Tô Lâm on Tuesday presided over a ceremony to present appointment decisions to five Vietnamese ambassadors assigned to key overseas postings, including India, Belgium, and Switzerland.
Speaking on behalf of the newly appointed envoys, Trịnh Minh Mạnh, Ambassador of Việt Nam to India, Nepal, and Bhutan, affirmed their commitment to fulfilling responsibilities entrusted by the Party, the State, and the people, while enhancing Việt Nam’s international standing.
Strategic Roles in a Complex Global Landscape
Addressing the diplomats, President Lâm underscored that their assignments are located in regions of significant political, economic, and security importance. He called on them to demonstrate courage, intellect, and a strong sense of duty in advancing Việt Nam’s foreign relations in a substantive, stable, and sustainable manner.
Highlighting the increasingly complex global environment, he stressed that diplomacy must be closely aligned with national development goals—supporting economic growth, mobilising external resources, and safeguarding the nation proactively in coordination with defence and security institutions.
Focus on Economic and Development Diplomacy
The Vietnamese leader directed the ambassadors to prioritise economic, scientific, and technology-driven diplomacy, placing development at the core of their missions. He urged them to expand markets, support innovation, and facilitate training in science and technology sectors.
He further described Vietnamese diplomatic missions abroad as “radar stations” capable of identifying opportunities and acting as bridges to global economic, financial, and technological hubs, while also supporting businesses, local authorities, and overseas Vietnamese communities.
From Relationship-Building to Value Creation
President Lâm instructed the ambassadors to adopt a results-oriented approach, shifting from traditional relationship-building to generating tangible development outcomes. He emphasized the need for concrete action plans tailored to each posting, clearly outlining cooperation opportunities, available resources, and expected results.
The ambassadors were also encouraged to strengthen research and forecasting capabilities, maintain Việt Nam’s independent and multilateral foreign policy, and deepen ties with neighbouring countries, strategic partners, and traditional allies.
Safeguarding National Interests
Reiterating the importance of trust-building and dialogue, the president urged diplomats to skilfully manage differences while firmly protecting Việt Nam’s legitimate interests. He also called for stronger implementation of overseas Vietnamese affairs and citizen protection initiatives.
Expressing confidence in the newly appointed envoys, President Lâm said their efforts would contribute to maintaining peace, enhancing international cooperation, and further elevating Việt Nam’s global standing.
