Azerbaijan, Belarus Parliamentary Speakers Discuss Expanding Bilateral Cooperation

Baku, May 22, 2026 – The Europe Today: Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova met with Natalya Kochanova, Chairperson of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus, on the sidelines of the 60th plenary session of the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly in Saint Petersburg.

During the meeting, the two sides underlined that relations between Azerbaijan and Belarus, founded on friendship and mutual trust, continue to develop successfully across multiple sectors. They stressed that the close ties between the heads of state, regular high-level visits, and sustained political dialogue have played a key role in advancing bilateral cooperation to its current level.

The discussions also highlighted the important role of legislative bodies in strengthening relations between the two countries and peoples, with both sides noting the successful continuation of interparliamentary cooperation.

Sahiba Gafarova recalled the recent visit of Igor Sergeyenko to Azerbaijan and the meetings held during the visit. She also referred to her previous visits to Belarus, as well as Natalya Kochanova’s visits to Baku, emphasizing that exchanges between parliamentary leaders and lawmakers further reinforce cooperation between the legislative bodies.

The sides noted that the parliaments of Azerbaijan and Belarus maintain productive bilateral cooperation and actively work together within international parliamentary organizations, including the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly, and the Asian Parliamentary Assembly.

Natalya Kochanova highlighted the dynamic growth of relations between the two countries in economic, trade, cultural, and other fields, noting that interparliamentary ties make a significant contribution to the further expansion of bilateral cooperation.
