Turkmenbashi, October 9, 2026 – The Europe Today: Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has emphasized the need for coordinated action to address the declining water level of the Caspian Sea, highlighting reduced river inflows and human activities alongside climate change as major contributing factors.
Addressing the Caspian Environmental Summit in Turkmenbashi, Turkmenistan, President Aliyev said the decline in the sea’s water level could not be attributed solely to climate change, pointing to the impact of reduced river inflows and anthropogenic factors associated with economic activities.
The Azerbaijani president stressed the importance of assessing the potential long-term consequences of the ongoing changes and incorporating these considerations into relevant policy decisions.
He noted that a forward-looking approach would enable the countries concerned to take timely measures to minimize the adverse effects of any further decline in the Caspian Sea’s water level.
Aliyev also expressed confidence that the existing legal framework, scientific capabilities and experience of cooperation among the relevant stakeholders provided a strong foundation for achieving tangible results.
His remarks underscored the importance of scientific assessment, regional cooperation and coordinated environmental policies in addressing the challenges facing the Caspian Sea and protecting its ecological sustainability.
