Royal Air Maroc to Expand Fleet with Embraer E190 Aircraft Amid Growth Strategy

Rabat, June 5, 2026 – The Europe Today: Morocco’s national carrier Royal Air Maroc (RAM) is expected to receive an Embraer E190 aircraft as part of its ongoing fleet expansion strategy aimed at strengthening capacity and improving operational efficiency.

According to Moroccan news outlet Le360, the new delivery will increase the airline’s Embraer E190 fleet to five aircraft, bringing Royal Air Maroc’s total fleet size to 66 aircraft.

The aircraft is configured to accommodate 96 passengers, including 84 seats in economy class and 12 in business class. The addition is expected to enhance the airline’s regional and medium-haul connectivity as part of its broader modernization plan.

The source cited by Le360 said the aircraft will be introduced under a leasing arrangement, a common industry practice that enables airlines to expand capacity while controlling investment costs. No official date has yet been announced for the aircraft’s delivery or entry into service.

The Embraer E190, manufactured by Brazilian aerospace company Embraer, is widely used by regional carriers around the world. Morocco has also been strengthening its cooperation with Embraer in recent years, particularly in the aerospace sector.

In 2024, Morocco and the Brazilian manufacturer signed a memorandum of understanding to develop joint projects in the country’s aerospace industry. More recently, reports in May indicated that negotiations are underway for a potential $600 million agreement involving the acquisition of up to five KC-390 Millennium military transport aircraft.

Royal Air Maroc, the country’s flag carrier, has been pursuing an ambitious expansion strategy to strengthen its global competitiveness, particularly ahead of major international events such as the FIFA World Cup 2030, which Morocco will co-host with Portugal and Spain.

The airline is also seeking to capitalize on Morocco’s growing tourism sector, with national targets aiming to attract more than 26 million visitors by 2030.

However, the carrier has faced periodic scrutiny over operational challenges, including baggage handling and passenger service disruptions. In one recent incident, passengers on Royal Air Maroc Flight AT201 at JFK Airport in New York reportedly remained on board for nearly five hours due to a technical issue before the flight was ultimately canceled, with travelers citing discomfort and limited onboard services during the delay.

Despite these challenges, Royal Air Maroc continues to pursue fleet modernization and network expansion as part of its long-term growth strategy.
