Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan Strengthen Economic Partnership at Ninth Joint Intergovernmental Commission Meeting

Turkmenistan

Ashgabat, July 9, 2026 – The Europe Today: Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan have reaffirmed their commitment to expanding bilateral economic cooperation during the ninth meeting of the Joint Intergovernmental Turkmen-Azerbaijani Commission on Economic Cooperation, held at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Turkmenistan on July 8.

The meeting brought together the chairman and members of the Commission from the Turkmen side and a high-level Azerbaijani delegation led by Azerbaijan’s Minister of Economy, Mikayil Jabbarov.

Participants noted with satisfaction that the consistent efforts of Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedow and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev have injected new momentum into bilateral relations, elevating interstate dialogue to a qualitatively higher level.

The Commission reviewed the implementation of decisions adopted during its previous session and discussed proposals aimed at further strengthening cooperation among the ministries, sectoral agencies, and working groups of both countries.

Special emphasis was placed on the growing trade and economic partnership, with participants highlighting the steady annual increase in bilateral trade turnover as evidence of the effectiveness and continued expansion of economic ties.

The two sides also explored ways to deepen cooperation across key sectors, including investment, advanced technologies, and industrial development. They agreed on concrete joint action plans to increase bilateral trade and underscored the importance of holding regular business forums and bilateral meetings to further stimulate commercial engagement.

Energy cooperation featured prominently in the discussions, with both delegations emphasizing the strategic importance of collaboration in the oil, gas, and power sectors. Recognizing their substantial hydrocarbon resources, the participants highlighted significant opportunities for coordinating activities in the global energy market and implementing major infrastructure projects.

The Commission also reviewed prospects for enhanced cooperation in transport, logistics, transit, digital development, and telecommunications, identifying these sectors as key drivers of future economic integration.

In the cultural and humanitarian sphere, both countries expressed a shared interest in expanding collaboration in science, historical and literary research, sports, and youth policy. Opportunities to strengthen cooperation in agriculture, food security, environmental protection, and urban development were also discussed.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the two sides signed a Protocol outlining joint measures to further enhance bilateral cooperation and ensure the effective implementation of agreed initiatives.

A separate narrow-format meeting between the Turkmen and Azerbaijani delegations also provided an opportunity for an in-depth exchange of views on advancing mutually beneficial cooperation and translating the agreements reached into practical outcomes.
