Ashgabat, September 2, 2026 – The Europe Today: A national seminar on biodiversity conservation and sustainable development is being held in Ashgabat within the framework of the Global Project of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
The two-day seminar is focused on updating Turkmenistan’s National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plans and preparing the country’s Seventh National Report under the Convention on Biological Diversity.
The event is being organized in partnership with the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan, with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Participants are reviewing the draft National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan of Turkmenistan for 2026–2035, along with key issues related to national reporting under the Convention on Biological Diversity.
Representatives of government institutions, scientific and research organizations, the private sector and civil society are participating in the seminar. Particular attention is being given to biodiversity conservation, the sustainable and rational use of natural resources, and the promotion of sustainable development.
The participants are also examining the draft Seventh National Report of Turkmenistan under the Convention on Biological Diversity, as well as specialized national reports prepared under the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety and the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit-sharing.
The seminar provides a platform for strengthening cooperation among national stakeholders and advancing coordinated measures to protect biodiversity and ensure the sustainable management of natural resources.
The event is also aimed at further enhancing Turkmenistan’s international cooperation in environmental protection and supporting the fulfilment of the country’s international obligations and commitments in the field of biodiversity conservation.
