Ashgabat, August 22, 2026 — The Europe Today: President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov received Tajik Foreign Minister Sirojiddin Muhriddin during his visit to Turkmenistan, with the two sides discussing the current state of Turkmen-Tajik strategic cooperation and prospects for further expanding bilateral relations.
During the meeting, Muhriddin expressed appreciation for the opportunity to meet with the Turkmen president and emphasized Tajikistan’s high regard for its traditionally friendly relations with Turkmenistan.
The Tajik foreign minister conveyed President Emomali Rahmon’s warm greetings and best wishes to President Serdar Berdimuhamedov and Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. He noted that strengthening cooperation with Turkmenistan remains one of Tajikistan’s foreign policy priorities.
President Serdar Berdimuhamedov, in turn, conveyed his best wishes to President Rahmon and expressed hope that the upcoming consultations between the foreign ministries of the two countries would contribute to expanding priority areas of strategic cooperation.
The Turkmen president emphasized that bilateral relations are based on historical ties, friendship and mutual respect, providing a solid foundation for further cooperation.
The two sides also highlighted the importance of interaction within international and regional organizations. Particular attention was paid to Turkmenistan’s chairmanship of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) this year. In this context, they noted plans to hold a meeting of the CIS Council of Heads of State in the Avaza National Tourist Zone, as well as a consultative meeting of the heads of state of Central Asian countries and Azerbaijan.
Trade and economic cooperation also featured prominently in the discussions. The sides underscored the important role of the joint intergovernmental commission and identified opportunities for expanding cooperation in energy, transport and agriculture.
They also emphasized the significance of the shared historical, cultural and spiritual values of the Turkmen and Tajik peoples in further developing cultural and humanitarian ties.
Earlier the same day, political consultations between the foreign ministries of Turkmenistan and Tajikistan were held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.
During the consultations, the two sides discussed ways to further strengthen political and diplomatic relations and reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining an effective and regular dialogue.
Following the consultations, the foreign ministries of Turkmenistan and Tajikistan signed a Program of Cooperation for 2027-2028, providing an institutional framework for continued interaction between the two countries’ diplomatic authorities.
