Hanoi, May 15, 2024, The Europe Today: Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính underscored the limitless potential of science, technology, and innovation during a ceremony celebrating Vietnam Science and Technology Day held on Wednesday in Hanoi.

In his address, PM Chính emphasized that the sources of scientific and technological breakthroughs are boundless and can emerge from the simplest ideas and the most ordinary people, irrespective of gender, education level, age, or social class.

The Prime Minister lauded recent scientific achievements in areas such as anti-malaria drug research, infectious diseases, dermatology, surgical techniques, missile improvements, and the construction of the Mỹ Thuận 2 Bridge, which showcases advancements on a larger, higher, and wider scale.

He stressed that science and technology must be rooted in practical solutions that yield tangible benefits for the nation and its people, aiming to build a strong, happy, and prosperous Việt Nam. He acknowledged the enduring passion and commitment of previous generations to science and technology, which have been passed down to the younger generation.

“The future owners of the country, driven by patriotism, national pride, intelligence, courage, and a desire for self-reliance, are determined to make practical contributions to the country’s scientific and technological development,” PM Chính stated.

However, the Prime Minister also pointed out the challenges Việt Nam faces, particularly due to the rapid advancements of the fourth industrial revolution, which is transforming all fields globally.

Citing successful examples from countries such as South Korea, Japan, China, the US, Germany, and Finland, PM Chính highlighted the critical role that science and technology play in national growth. He affirmed that the Party and the State prioritize the development and application of science and technology as a key driver for socio-economic progress, placing it at the top of the agenda across all sectors.

“Developing science and technology is a wise choice and should be given preference,” he asserted.

PM Chính called for creating ideal conditions for the growth of science and technology, enhancing the attraction and diversification of resources dedicated to innovation. He encouraged public-private partnerships in training human resources for science and technology and emphasized the need to develop a robust science and technology market to boost productivity, quality, and efficiency.

The Prime Minister urged enterprises to focus on research, development, and the application of science and technology, identifying them as crucial drivers of innovation. He stressed the importance of attracting Vietnamese scientists working abroad to contribute to domestic scientific advancements, ensuring their research aligns with global standards.

He also highlighted the significant responsibility scientists have towards national and ethnic interests, urging them to commit to their professional tasks for the honor and pride of the people and the country.

With a solid tradition of scientific excellence, PM Chính expressed confidence that Việt Nam’s scientists will continue to overcome challenges, promote patriotism and solidarity, and make substantial contributions to the nation’s development.

According to the Ministry of Science and Technology, Việt Nam had around 3,800 innovative startups last year, with 11 valued at over US$100 million. The country boasts 208 investment funds, 84 incubators, and 35 business promotion organizations. Việt Nam’s global innovation index (GII) has been steadily improving, ranking 46th out of 132 countries last year, fourth in Southeast Asia, and second among low to middle-income economies.

The Prime Minister concluded by reiterating the importance of fostering a scientific and technological ecosystem that rewards passion, honors contributions, and drives the nation towards a prosperous future.
