Hanoi, July 25, 2024, The Europe Today: The State funeral for Nguyễn Phú Trọng, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, commenced at 7am on Thursday at the National Funeral Hall, No 5 Trần Thánh Tông, Hanoi. Concurrent respect-paying ceremonies are being held at the Thống Nhất Hall in Ho Chi Minh City and in his hometown of Đông Hội Commune, Đông Anh District, Hanoi.
The State funeral is organized by the Party Central Committee, the National Assembly, the State President’s Office, the Government, and the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee, alongside his family.
A delegation from the Party Central Committee, led by Politburo member and State President Tô Lâm, paid homage to the late Party chief. Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính led the Government delegation to pay tribute, followed by President Tô Lâm, who led the President’s delegation to offer condolences to Trọng’s family. The National Assembly (NA) delegation, headed by NA Chairman Trần Thanh Mẫn, also paid their respects.
Several former Party and State leaders, including former Party General Secretary Nông Đức Mạnh and former State Presidents Nguyễn Minh Triết, Trương Tấn Sang, Nguyễn Xuân Phúc, and Võ Văn Thưởng, attended the funeral. Former Prime Minister Nguyễn Tấn Dũng and former National Assembly Chairpersons Nguyễn Sinh Hùng, Nguyễn Thị Kim Ngân, and Vương Đình Huệ were also present.
In the funeral guest book, President Tô Lâm expressed his condolences, lauding Trọng as a beloved leader and an exceptional communist. Lâm highlighted Trọng’s lifelong dedication to the country, the Party, and the people, noting his significant contributions to the revolutionary cause, the international communist movement, and global peace and stability.
“The name, career, personality, and great contributions of Party General Secretary Nguyễn Phú Trọng have been deeply imprinted in the hearts of the people, forever preserved in the heroic history of the civilised and heroic Vietnamese people,” Lâm wrote.
On Thursday morning, numerous foreign delegations from various countries and international organizations paid their respects to the late leader. The respect-paying ceremonies continued until 10pm on Thursday and resumed from 7am to 1pm on Friday at the National Funeral Hall in Hanoi.
A memorial service is scheduled for 1pm on Friday at the National Funeral Hall, followed by the burial ceremony at 3pm at Mai Dịch Cemetery, Hanoi.
