Vietnam Seeks Closer Cooperation with OECD on Sustainable Development Goals

Hanoi, September 29, 2024 – The Europe Today: Ambassador Đặng Hoàng Giang, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the United Nations, expressed hopes for strengthened coordination between Vietnam and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) on mutual concerns at UN forums. His remarks came during a meeting on September 27 with Andreas Schaal, Director for OECD Global Relations and Cooperation, as well as OECD Sherpa to the G7, G20, and APEC.

Ambassador Giang acknowledged the OECD’s significant role in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), global governance, and support for developing countries. He emphasized that the OECD’s assistance is crucial in helping Vietnam achieve its long-term goal of becoming a high-income country by 2045. Additionally, he noted the OECD’s potential to help bridge the economic gap between developed and developing nations.

In response, Schaal expressed his condolences over the passing of the late General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Nguyễn Phú Trọng, and acknowledged the challenges Vietnam has faced following Typhoon Yagi. He reiterated the OECD’s close cooperation with Vietnam in implementing the SDGs and other areas of mutual interest. Schaal also expressed the OECD’s interest in establishing mechanisms for information exchange with developing nations, the Group of 77 (G77), and ASEAN.

Both sides highlighted the importance of continued collaboration in global development efforts.
