Istanbul, January 3, 2025 – The Europe Today: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed confidence that history will validate Türkiye’s principled stance on the Gaza crisis, drawing parallels to its position on Syria.
“Just as we were proven right in Syria, history will also affirm our righteousness in the Gaza crisis,” Erdogan declared during an address at the Türkiye Exporters Assembly in Istanbul on Friday.
Syria’s Regime Change and Türkiye’s Predictions
The president referenced recent developments in Syria, where anti-regime forces took control of Damascus on December 8, prompting Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad to flee to Russia. Erdogan emphasized that Türkiye’s foresight and policies on Syria have been vindicated, asserting that a similar recognition will emerge regarding its position on Gaza.
Türkiye’s Bold Stand on Gaza
Erdogan highlighted Türkiye’s unique position as the only country to completely halt trade with Israel, underscoring a principled response to the ongoing humanitarian crisis. In May, Türkiye ceased all trade with Israel, a bilateral exchange previously valued at approximately $9.5 billion annually.
The decision came amid what Erdogan described as a “genocidal war” on Gaza, which has claimed nearly 45,600 lives—predominantly women and children—since October 7, 2023. The Israeli military campaign has continued despite a United Nations Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire.
Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza
Erdogan condemned Israel’s blockade on Gaza, which has left its population, particularly in northern regions, teetering on the brink of starvation. The Turkish leader described the blockade as a violation of fundamental human rights and a grave injustice.
Türkiye’s Humanitarian Efforts
Türkiye has been among the most vocal critics of Israel’s military actions in Gaza, extending substantial humanitarian assistance to the besieged territory. This aid includes food and medical supplies, as well as the evacuation of thousands of patients requiring urgent care. Erdogan reiterated Türkiye’s commitment to supporting Gaza, both diplomatically and through sustained humanitarian efforts.
Global Call for Justice
Erdogan urged the international community to take decisive action to end the suffering in Gaza, emphasizing that Türkiye will continue to champion the rights of oppressed populations and work toward a just resolution to the crisis.
“Türkiye’s stance is guided by principles of justice and humanity. We believe history will reflect this truth,” Erdogan concluded.
