Washington, D.C., January 6, 2025 – The Europe Today: Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson has affirmed that Congress will convene on Monday as planned to formally certify Donald Trump’s election as president, despite a massive winter storm sweeping across the United States.
“The Electoral Count Act requires this on January 6 at 1 pm – so, whether we’re in a blizzard or not, we’re going to be in that chamber making sure this is done,” Johnson stated during an interview on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures. He expressed optimism for full attendance and encouraged lawmakers to remain in the city to avoid travel complications.
The National Weather Service has issued severe weather advisories across the eastern half of the country, with forecasts predicting heavy snow and high winds stretching from the Central Plains to the mid-Atlantic states. In Washington, D.C., mixed snow and sleet accumulations are expected to reach between 7 and 18 centimeters, raising concerns over hazardous commutes and potential disruptions to schools, businesses, and government operations.
Washington public schools have already announced closures for Monday, with several suburban Virginia counties following suit. Similar decisions are anticipated from Maryland school systems. The city, which has experienced relatively mild winters in recent years, has often struggled to manage significant snow or ice events.
Members of Congress returned to Washington last Friday after their winter break, and Republicans held a strategy meeting on Saturday with Speaker Johnson to discuss legislative priorities. Despite the impending storm, Republican leaders remain steadfast in their commitment to proceed without delay.
“No change to the schedule,” confirmed Lauren Fine, Communications Director for Republican House Majority Leader Steve Scalise.
The certification process is traditionally a routine formality. However, it gained notoriety four years ago when supporters of Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol to disrupt the certification of Democrat Joe Biden’s 2020 victory. This year, Biden and Democratic leaders have reaffirmed their commitment to respecting the election results and ensuring an orderly certification.
As the storm intensifies, all eyes will be on Capitol Hill on Monday to witness Congress’s resolve in upholding the democratic process amid challenging conditions.
