Baku, April 4, 2025 – The Europe Today: The city of Baku on Friday hosted a high-level roundtable discussion on Offshore Wind Power Development between Azerbaijan and the European Union (EU), held on the sidelines of the 11th Southern Gas Corridor Advisory Council Ministerial Meeting and the 3rd Green Energy Advisory Council Ministerial Meeting.
The event brought together key figures including Azerbaijan’s Minister of Energy, Parviz Shahbazov; European Commissioner for Energy and Housing, Dan Jørgensen; and CEO of WindEurope, Giles Dickson. Representatives from leading European wind energy companies and financial institutions also participated in the dialogue.
During the session, participants were briefed on recent developments in Azerbaijan’s offshore wind sector, including the identification of five promising zones within the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea and the ongoing measurement and observation activities. It was highlighted that in the initial phase, Azerbaijan plans to export 4 GW of offshore wind energy to Europe through the Caspian-Black Sea-Europe Green Energy Corridor. Additional interconnectors are also planned to expand energy transmission to various European countries.
The discussions emphasized the strategic opportunities for European companies to play an active role in Azerbaijan’s offshore wind energy initiatives. Participants noted that the synergy between European technology and investment, combined with Azerbaijan’s abundant natural resources and advantageous geographic location, could yield transformative outcomes for regional energy security and green development.
Both sides reaffirmed their shared commitment to deepening cooperation in the development of Azerbaijan’s offshore wind potential. The meeting also reviewed the progress made under the 2024 Memorandum of Understanding between the Azerbaijan Renewable Energy Agency (AREA) and WindEurope, including deliberations on future collaborative steps.
The roundtable served as a testament to the growing strategic energy partnership between Azerbaijan and the European Union, particularly in advancing the green energy transition and enhancing cross-border energy connectivity.
