Jerusalem, May 3, 2026 – The Europe Today: Swedish man arrested by Israeli authorities in connection with the recent operation against a Gaza-bound flotilla has appeared before an Israeli court, according to AFP.
The man, reportedly in his 40s and holding dual Swedish and Spanish citizenship, was detained alongside a Brazilian activist. Both individuals are currently being held at Shikma Prison in Ashkelon. Their court appearance took place on Sunday, as confirmed by Miriam Azem of the Adalah Legal Center, which is representing them.
Azem stated that Israeli prosecutors have requested a four-day extension of the detainees’ custody while investigations continue. The Swedish-Spanish national is reportedly under investigation for alleged links to the Popular Conference for Palestinians Abroad, which Israel has designated as a terrorist organization. The United States has also accused the group of acting on behalf of Hamas. Israeli authorities claim the suspect holds a leading role within the organization.
According to legal representatives, the Brazilian detainee alleged that he was subjected to “extreme brutality” during the interception of the flotilla in the Mediterranean Sea. He claimed he was dragged face down, beaten until unconscious, and later held in isolation with a blindfold upon arrival in Israel.
The Swedish-Spanish detainee similarly told lawyers that he was forced to lie face down throughout the journey to Israel. Israeli officials have not publicly responded to these allegations.
The arrests followed an Israeli military operation on Thursday targeting a flotilla of more than 50 boats attempting to reach Gaza in an effort to break the blockade and deliver humanitarian aid. Approximately 20 vessels were intercepted near Crete, more than 1,000 kilometers from Gaza.
The situation remains under investigation as legal proceedings continue.
