Tajikistan

New York, June 26, 2026 – The Europe Today: The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a landmark resolution proclaiming the International Decade of Strengthening of Peace for Future Generations (2027–2036), an initiative put forward by the President of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon, reaffirming the international community’s commitment to promoting peace, dialogue, and intergenerational solidarity.

The resolution was adopted on the evening of June 25 during a session of the UN General Assembly. It underscores the importance of strengthening global efforts to ensure that peace, reconciliation, and cooperation remain central to safeguarding the well-being of future generations.

Recalling the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter, the resolution reiterates the organization’s commitment to protecting future generations from the scourge of war and resolving international disputes through peaceful means. It also recognizes the significance of the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace as a universal framework for fostering peace and non-violence worldwide.

Under the resolution, the period from 2027 to 2036 has been officially proclaimed as the International Decade of Strengthening of Peace for Future Generations. The initiative aims to encourage peacebuilding, dialogue, reconciliation, and cooperation among people of all ages, while ensuring that the interests and needs of future generations are reflected in national and international policymaking.

The resolution highlights the valuable contributions of member states, political leaders, and communities that have advanced peace, national reconciliation, and unity through inclusive governance, confidence-building measures, post-conflict recovery, and sustained investments in social cohesion. It notes that these experiences offer important lessons and inspiration for present and future generations.

The General Assembly also welcomed commitments made during the 2024 Summit of the Future, including the adoption of the Pact for the Future, through which member states pledged to strengthen international cooperation in protecting the interests of future generations.

Additionally, the resolution acknowledges recent positive developments in Central Asia, welcoming the peaceful efforts of Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan to resolve border issues through dialogue and the signing of relevant bilateral agreements.

The document calls upon the UN Secretary-General, specialized agencies, regional commissions, and other United Nations bodies to support the implementation of the Decade in partnership with governments and relevant stakeholders. Member states, civil society organizations, and international partners are also encouraged to contribute by sharing best practices and supporting initiatives that promote peace and sustainable development.

The adoption of the resolution comes at a time when millions of people across the world continue to face the consequences of armed conflicts and security challenges. Observers say the initiative reflects Tajikistan’s long-standing commitment to promoting peace and national unity, drawing on its own experience of overcoming civil conflict through reconciliation and dialogue.

The resolution is expected to further strengthen the global culture of peace agenda and reinforce international cooperation in building a more peaceful, inclusive, and sustainable future for generations to come.
