France Expresses Solidarity with Việt Nam Following Devastating Typhoon Yagi

Hanoi, September 14, 2024 – The Europe Today: French President Emmanuel Macron has expressed France’s unwavering solidarity with Việt Nam after Typhoon Yagi ravaged the Southeast Asian nation in recent days, resulting in significant loss of life and widespread destruction.

In a message posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on September 12, President Macron extended his condolences and affirmed France’s readiness to assist in relief efforts. “I would like to express France’s solidarity with Việt Nam after the devastation of Typhoon Yagi, which has claimed the lives of hundreds of people and caused severe damage. We stand ready to provide support,” Macron stated.

French media outlets have extensively covered the catastrophic impact of Typhoon Yagi, noting the substantial human and material losses in Việt Nam. The typhoon, one of the most powerful storms to strike the country in decades, has left a trail of destruction, making recovery efforts even more urgent.

In a show of international cooperation, the Vietnamese Embassy in Poland has launched a fundraising campaign to aid those affected by the storm. Ambassador Hà Hoàng Hải reported that embassy staff raised VNĐ 50 million (approximately US$2,037) to support victims. These funds will be distributed through official channels to ensure they reach the communities most in need.

At a meeting with representatives of the Vietnamese Association in Poland, Ambassador Hải called on Vietnamese organizations, collectives, and individuals in the country to contribute to the relief efforts.

According to the Việt Nam Disaster and Dyke Management Authority under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Typhoon Yagi and its aftermath have resulted in 233 fatalities, with 103 people still missing as of 7 a.m. on Friday. The storm has left widespread damage in its wake, complicating recovery efforts for many affected regions.

France’s support, alongside the efforts of the global Vietnamese community, underscores the importance of international solidarity in times of crisis as Việt Nam works to rebuild and recover from this tragic disaster.
