Uzbekistan Launches Major Energy and Industrial Projects in Tashkent Region

Tashkent, October 15, 2024 – The Europe Today: On October 14, a ceremony marking the launch and construction of new energy and industrial projects in the Tashkent region was held in the Yangiyul district. The event highlighted the strategic significance of the region, which has seen rapid economic growth in recent years.

President Shavkat Mirziyoyev emphasized the region’s importance in Uzbekistan’s economy, noting that industrial production has increased 1.5 times over the past five years, reaching 107 trillion UZS. Exports have surged 3.5 times, approaching $1 billion. Investments in the region have also grown substantially, rising from $20 million in 2018 to $1 billion last year. The number of enterprises with foreign capital has reached 1,700.

Currently, 91 foreign investment projects worth over $20 billion and 28 domestic projects valued at $4.5 billion are underway in the Tashkent region.

Among the key initiatives is the construction of the “Great Silk Road” industrial technopark in Olmaliq. This $1 billion project will span 227 hectares and host approximately 100 enterprises in sectors such as electrical engineering, textiles, construction materials, and pharmaceuticals. The technopark is expected to generate 3,000 new jobs and produce goods valued at 5 trillion UZS annually, with export potential of $300 million.

Additionally, a $350 million textile industrial park covering 69 hectares is being developed in Yuqorichirchiq district. The park will house over 20 enterprises producing yarn, dyed fabric, and finished textile products, further boosting the region’s industrial output.

Tashkent region’s food production and export capabilities are also expanding. By 2030, Uzbekistan aims to double food production, increase exports fivefold, and triple the level of added value. Projects in Yangiyul and Qibray districts will contribute significantly to these targets, including the production of 50,000 tons of mineral fertilizers annually and high-quality food products geared towards export markets.

The energy sector in Tashkent region is set to grow, with a current capacity of 5.7 gigawatts. Six new projects, valued at $1.5 billion, will add over 800 megawatts to the region’s capacity. President Mirziyoyev announced plans to develop electricity storage systems with a total capacity of 4,100 megawatts by 2030 to ensure the stability of the energy system.

A key component of this expansion is a $240 million solar power plant being built in Buka district in collaboration with China Datang, which will generate 576 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. Two additional energy storage systems, valued at $220 million, are being developed with China Energy Overseas Investment in Parkent and Pskent districts, aimed at mitigating power outages during peak hours.

In the hydroelectric sector, Uzbekistan has increased capacity to 2.2 gigawatts through $630 million in investments. The Tashkent region, home to 60 percent of the country’s hydroelectric power capacity, is set to play a crucial role in further expansion, with 23 hydroelectric projects worth $4.8 billion planned by 2028. Two new hydroelectric plants were inaugurated during the ceremony, adding a combined 4 megawatts of capacity.

President Mirziyoyev expressed his gratitude to foreign investors and companies involved in these transformative projects and officially launched the construction and operation of nine new projects, worth a total of $2 billion.

These initiatives are set to further enhance the economic and industrial capabilities of the Tashkent region, reinforcing its strategic role in Uzbekistan’s development.
