Stockholm, January 11, 2026 – The Europe Today: An opening ceremony marking the start of the new academic year was held at the Garabagh Weekend School, operating under the Sweden–Azerbaijan Union (SAF), in the Swedish capital.
The event underscored the importance of fostering attachment to national and spiritual values and nurturing patriotism among children of Azerbaijanis living abroad. Speakers highlighted the role of weekend schools in preserving national identity and strengthening ties with the homeland.
Referring to remarks by President of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Victorious Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev at the 5th Congress of World Azerbaijanis held in Shusha, it was noted that weekend schools operating outside the country hold strategic significance for the future development of Azerbaijan’s diaspora.
Chairwoman of the Sweden–Azerbaijan Union Sevda Dadashova said such educational institutions play an irreplaceable role in protecting Azerbaijani children abroad from assimilation while preserving their native language, national identity, history, and cultural heritage.
“The native language is the soul of the nation and the memory of the people. A child who knows their native language recognizes their roots, understands their identity, and strengthens their spiritual ties with the Motherland. The Garabagh Weekend School, operating precisely for this noble purpose, instills in children not only knowledge but also love for Azerbaijan, national pride, and patriotism,” Dadashova said.
She emphasized that the school receives continued support from the State Committee on Work with Diaspora of the Republic of Azerbaijan and expressed gratitude to the Committee’s Chairman Fuad Muradov and its staff.
During the ceremony, the annual curriculum of the Garabagh Weekend School was presented. Dadashova also introduced new pupils and teachers and briefed attendees on the school’s activities.
In the new academic year, the Garabagh Weekend School plans to offer classes in the Azerbaijani language, national music, and folk dances.
