Dushanbe, June 27, 2026 – The Europe Today: Tajikistan on Saturday celebrated the 29th anniversary of National Unity Day, commemorating the signing of the General Agreement on the Establishment of Peace and National Accord in Tajikistan on June 27, 1997, which brought an end to the country’s devastating civil war.

To mark the occasion, the Tajik National News Agency Khovar published a selection of quotations from speeches delivered by President Emomali Rahmon, Leader of the Nation, highlighting the importance of peace, stability, and national unity in the country’s development.

President Rahmon described national unity, alongside state independence, as “a fundamental pillar of statehood and the essential condition for the progress and prosperity of Tajikistan.” He emphasized that strengthening and safeguarding unity remains a sacred national mission supported by the proud people of Tajikistan.

The president noted that the culture of peace and tolerance achieved through national reconciliation has gained international recognition, with global research institutions studying the Tajik peace process as a unique model for ending armed conflict.

Rahmon recalled that the foundations of peace and unity were laid during the historic 16th Session of the Supreme Council of Tajikistan, where the newly elected leadership initiated efforts to stop bloodshed and bring opposing sides together.

He described June 27, 1997, as a “fateful date written in golden letters in the history of independent Tajikistan”, when the wisdom of the Tajik people prevailed and the peace accord created a lasting foundation for reconciliation and national unity.

Among the most notable statements highlighted by Khovar was President Rahmon’s declaration that “the true heroes of peace, stability, and national unity are the noble and proud people of Tajikistan.”

He stressed that all national achievements are the result of independence, peace, and unity, adding that the realization of citizens’ aspirations and the country’s continued development depend on political stability and social harmony.

The president also warned that growing global political and economic complexities, ideological confrontations, information competition, and other challenges associated with globalization require even greater efforts to preserve peace and strengthen national unity.

Concluding his message, Rahmon urged citizens to remain united, vigilant, and ready to defend the country’s national interests, while safeguarding independence and national unity as Tajikistan’s most sacred and greatest achievements.
