Azerbaijan, UN Special Envoy Discuss Road Safety Cooperation and Sustainable Transport

Baku, July 3, 2026 – The Europe Today: Azerbaijan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Jeyhun Bayramov met with Jean Todt, the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety, on July 2 to discuss bilateral cooperation with the UN, global road safety initiatives and efforts to strengthen international collaboration in the sector.

During the meeting, the two sides reviewed the Azerbaijan-United Nations cooperation agenda, with particular focus on road safety, sustainable transport and international initiatives aimed at reducing road traffic accidents.

Minister Bayramov briefed the UN envoy on Azerbaijan’s ongoing reforms to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), highlighting the country’s efforts to develop a safe, sustainable and modern transport system while enhancing road safety nationwide.

He outlined Azerbaijan’s progress in modernizing transport infrastructure, introducing digital technologies and implementing measures to improve road safety. The minister also highlighted major road and infrastructure projects being carried out across the country, including in the liberated territories.

Jean Todt, for his part, provided an overview of his work as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety, including international efforts to prevent road accidents and strengthen global cooperation in promoting safer roads.

He commended Azerbaijan’s achievements in improving road safety and underscored the importance of continuing close cooperation in support of international road safety objectives.

The meeting also included an exchange of views on other issues of mutual interest.
