Babar Azam Vows Focus on Discipline, Fitness and Performance as Pakistan Test Captain

Pakistan

Lahore, July 7, 2026 – The Europe Today: Pakistan Test captain Babar Azam has expressed confidence ahead of his return to leadership of the national red-ball side, pledging to prioritise discipline, fitness and performance as the team prepares for challenging tours of the West Indies and England.

Speaking during an interview on the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) social media platform, Babar said leading Pakistan is always a privilege and noted that his previous captaincy experience has helped him develop greater maturity and clarity.

“My main focus is on three things: discipline, fitness and performance. These will matter a lot for me as captain and for the team going forward. Whenever I get the opportunity to lead, I always try to back the players, but I will not compromise on these three things,” he said.

Reflecting on his earlier stint as captain, Babar said he had carefully reviewed his decisions and learnt valuable lessons that would help him lead the side more effectively.

“With time, you gain maturity and clarity. I have rebuilt my mindset, taken things positively and I am confident that, with good planning, I can lead the team well,” he added.

Highlighting the composition of the current squad, Babar described Pakistan as a young team featuring several outstanding performers from domestic cricket. He stressed the importance of supporting emerging players, particularly during difficult periods, and helping them cope with the pressures of international cricket.

“As a senior player and captain, my responsibility is to help the youngsters perform, keep them relaxed and support them in challenging situations,” he said.

Babar also underlined the significance of the recently concluded National Cricket Academy (NCA) Red-Ball Camp, describing it as an important step in preparing the squad for the demands of Test cricket.

He said the camp focused on improving players’ fitness, fielding standards and patience, adding that training under difficult conditions would better equip the team for high-pressure international matches.

According to Babar, the coaching staff also worked extensively with players on handling pressure situations, responding to changing match scenarios and developing strategies to counter opposition tactics.

Looking ahead to the upcoming overseas assignments, Babar said the team had tailored its preparations to suit the expected conditions in both the West Indies and England.

He acknowledged that the West Indies tour would present a stern challenge, while noting that several members of the squad possess valuable county cricket experience in England, which would prove beneficial during the tour.

Discussing his own batting philosophy, Babar said he always prioritises the needs of the team over individual milestones.

“Whether the team requires quick runs or a more patient approach, my focus is always on playing according to the situation and contributing in the best possible way,” he remarked.

Addressing criticism and public expectations, the Pakistan skipper said players welcome constructive feedback but prefer to ignore unnecessary negativity.

He encouraged young cricketers to remain committed to hard work and consistent routines, emphasising that success comes through patience and continuous improvement rather than immediate results.

Babar also called on cricket fans to continue supporting the national side, particularly as a youthful squad embarks on demanding overseas tours.

He acknowledged the high expectations of supporters and assured them that the team would strive to deliver strong performances while learning from both victories and setbacks.
