Baku, August 19, 2026 — The Europe Today: President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev received newly appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to Azerbaijan Duncan Norman on Aug. 18.
During the meeting, Ambassador Norman presented his credentials to President Aliyev and expressed his honor at opening a new chapter in relations between Azerbaijan and the United Kingdom. Speaking in Azerbaijani, he recalled his first visit to Azerbaijan 27 years ago, saying he and his wife had been impressed by the warmth of the Azerbaijani people and Baku’s potential.
The ambassador noted that work was underway to establish a new strategic partnership between the two countries, which he said would further strengthen bilateral achievements through deeper cooperation, enhanced security and innovation in areas of common interest.
Norman expressed the UK’s interest in developing dynamic cooperation with Azerbaijan in renewable energy, defense and aviation, while also emphasizing the importance of educational ties and stronger links between young people.
He said the UK Government appreciated President Ilham Aliyev’s efforts to advance the peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia and supported the progress achieved. The ambassador also recalled that the United Kingdom was the first international partner to support Azerbaijan’s demining efforts.
President Ilham Aliyev welcomed the ambassador and wished him success during his diplomatic mission in Azerbaijan. He also praised Norman for addressing him in Azerbaijani.
The Azerbaijani president emphasized that the issues discussed were important not only for bilateral relations but also for regional development and cooperation. He expressed appreciation to the UK Government for its assistance in demining activities, noting that Azerbaijan required closer international cooperation in this field.
President Aliyev recalled that Azerbaijan-UK cooperation began in the energy sector three decades ago and highlighted significant opportunities for expanding partnership in renewable energy. In this regard, he noted that the first solar power plant in Azerbaijan’s liberated territories had been constructed by bp.
The president also underlined the significance of the current regional situation, noting that Azerbaijan had experienced only one year of peace during the 35 years since regaining independence. He said the establishment of lasting peace represented a major transformation for the region, while security would remain a priority on Azerbaijan’s agenda.
Highlighting Azerbaijan’s favorable investment climate, President Aliyev noted the strong mutual interest among Azerbaijani and British companies in expanding economic cooperation.
The president wished Ambassador Duncan Norman success in his diplomatic activities in Azerbaijan.
