Astana, November 28, 2024 – The Europe Today: President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has emphasized significant progress in the promotion of coordinated approaches at the international level, particularly through the adoption of crucial political documents and resolutions. Among the key developments reported were statements on international information security, space exploration cooperation, the Middle East situation, and the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of Belarus’ liberation from Nazi invaders.
Speaking at a key session, President Tokayev highlighted that throughout the year, the combat training of forces and the operational readiness of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) forces have been a priority. He announced that two protocols to international agreements would be signed during the meeting: one concerning the status of CSTO forces and means, and another on the transportation of military contingents.
The President also provided an update on the work undertaken to improve the skills and preparedness of CSTO peacekeeping forces, noting the successful joint exercises held earlier in the year. In September and October, Kazakhstan hosted the Indestructible Brotherhood-2024 command and staff exercises and the Rock-2024 special CSTO exercises. These drills included complex emergency rescue operations at high-risk facilities and fostered coordination among CSTO peacekeeping forces.
“We paid special attention to countering current challenges and threats,” Tokayev said, referring to several special operations held across CSTO member states. These operations, including Naemnik (Mercenary), Kanal (Channel), Nelegal (Illegal), and Proxy, were aimed at preventing international terrorism, drug trafficking, illegal migration, and countering threats in the information environment.
Tokayev further highlighted Kazakhstan’s initiative in holding consultations to combat illegal trafficking in weapons, ammunition, and transnational organized crime. This marked the first time such consultations had taken place, and discussions are now underway regarding the creation of a specialized working group within the CSTO to address these issues.
In a significant development, President Tokayev announced the completion of work on the CSTO’s target interstate program aimed at strengthening the Tajik-Afghan border. The program, which Kazakhstan has coordinated since 2013, will culminate in the signing of a key document aimed at bolstering the southern borders of the CSTO.
“Today, we will sign this important decision, which will contribute to the security of our southern borders,” President Tokayev remarked. He reiterated that Kazakhstan’s presidency in the CSTO has followed a systematic and gradual implementation of priorities, with the support of CSTO partners.
The Kazakh President also expressed gratitude to the CSTO’s Secretary General, Permanent Council, and working structures for their substantial contributions to the organization’s success. He expressed confidence that through continued joint efforts, the CSTO would achieve its high-level goals.
The meeting underscored Kazakhstan’s ongoing commitment to enhancing regional security and deepening cooperation within the CSTO framework, focusing on collective action to address the evolving security challenges of the 21st century.
