New York, January 29, 2025 – The Europe Today: The United Nations confirmed on Tuesday that it has received official notification from the United States regarding its withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement, fulfilling a key campaign pledge by President Donald Trump.
“I can confirm to you that the United States has notified the Secretary-General, in his capacity as a depository, of its withdrawal on January 27 of this year from the Paris Agreement,” said Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
In accordance with Article 28, paragraph two, of the agreement, the U.S. withdrawal will formally take effect on January 27, 2026.
The Paris Climate Agreement, adopted in 2015, is a landmark international accord aimed at combating climate change through greenhouse gas reduction commitments from nearly 200 countries. The U.S. had previously withdrawn from the agreement in 2020 under Trump’s first term, only to rejoin in 2021 under President Joe Biden.
The decision to withdraw again has drawn sharp criticism from environmental advocates and international leaders, who warn that it could undermine global efforts to combat climate change. Meanwhile, the Biden administration has condemned the move, with Democratic lawmakers vowing to challenge the decision.
As the withdrawal process unfolds, its impact on U.S. climate policy and global cooperation on environmental initiatives remains a subject of intense debate.
