Beijing, February 7, 2025 – The Europe Today: Chinese Premier Li Qiang met with Sultan of Brunei Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, who is on a state visit to China, in Beijing on Thursday. The meeting underscored the growing ties between the two nations and their commitment to enhancing cooperation in various sectors.
Premier Li highlighted that under the strategic leadership of the two heads of state, China and Brunei have steadily advanced their bilateral relationship, achieving significant progress in multiple fields. He reaffirmed China’s recognition of Brunei as an important regional partner and expressed Beijing’s readiness to implement the consensus reached by the two leaders, maintain high-level exchanges, and strengthen political mutual trust.
China is keen to elevate economic and trade collaboration with Brunei, leveraging the renewal of the Belt and Road cooperation plan to accelerate key infrastructure projects. Li emphasized that China is prepared to expand cooperation in the information industry, scientific and technological innovation, green development, and agriculture, fostering new economic drivers. Additionally, China aims to import more high-quality agricultural and aquatic products from Brunei and encourage investment by qualified Chinese enterprises in the country.
Premier Li reiterated China’s firm support for ASEAN’s unity and strategic autonomy, expressing Beijing’s willingness to collaborate with all ASEAN member states, including Brunei, to strengthen regional integration and build a closer China-ASEAN community with a shared future.
Sultan Hassanal, in turn, emphasized Brunei’s strong commitment to its relationship with China and its adherence to the one-China policy. He reaffirmed Brunei’s interest in expanding cooperation in trade, petrochemicals, the digital economy, agriculture, and climate change initiatives.
The Sultan also expressed Brunei’s readiness to deepen cooperation within the ASEAN-China framework, strengthen regional connectivity, and enhance people-to-people exchanges. He acknowledged China’s significant role in international and regional affairs and voiced support for China’s accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).
The meeting reaffirmed both nations’ shared vision of promoting regional peace, stability, and prosperity through closer economic and strategic collaboration.
