Kyiv, March 4, 2025 – The Europe Today: Ukraine’s 450-seat parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, officially acknowledged former U.S. President Donald Trump’s pivotal role in negotiating a peace settlement between Ukraine and Russia. In a statement released Monday evening, Ukrainian lawmakers endorsed Trump’s efforts, emphasizing the crucial role of American assistance in ensuring Ukraine’s sovereignty and stability.
The Rada stated, “On behalf of the Ukrainian people, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine expresses its profound gratitude to President Donald Trump, the United States Congress, and the American people for their firm and consistent support of Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.” The statement further highlighted the necessity of continued strategic partnership with the U.S., particularly in the development of critical mineral resources.
This endorsement follows a tense public altercation between Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and Trump during a White House meeting last week. The dispute escalated after Trump’s direct negotiations with Russia, which bypassed Ukrainian and EU input. Trump accused Zelensky of being ungrateful, while Zelensky insisted on U.S. security guarantees for Ukraine.
Despite the tensions, Trump has dismissed any immediate security commitments, including NATO membership for Ukraine or American troop deployment for peacekeeping. He stated that Zelensky lacks leverage in the negotiations and reiterated that the U.S.-Russia talks in Riyadh had proceeded without Ukraine’s direct involvement.
Zelensky later expressed appreciation on social media, thanking Trump, Congress, and the American people while reiterating Ukraine’s pursuit of a just and lasting peace.
