Turkish Parliament Speaker Calls for Overhaul of Global Political and Economic System at IPU Assembly

Tashkent, April 7, 2025 — The Europe Today: Turkish Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş has called for a comprehensive transformation of the current global political and economic order, describing it as unjust, unsustainable, and increasingly dangerous for international peace and stability.

Speaking on Sunday at the 150th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Tashkent, Kurtulmuş said the prevailing global system disproportionately serves the interests of a few powerful nations while fostering inequality, weakening sovereign states, and exacerbating global conflicts.

“Even the events in Palestine alone, if we put aside all other global disasters and conflicts, clearly show that there is a need for a new system and a new global political and economic architecture,” he stated.

Kurtulmuş emphasized the urgency for the international community to reorient development and governance priorities around human dignity, justice, and inclusivity, rather than material gain and power consolidation.

Warning on Digital Platforms and Democratic Erosion

In addition to economic and geopolitical concerns, the Turkish Speaker raised alarms about the growing influence of digital media platforms and algorithm-driven content, warning that they pose a real threat to democratic participation by manipulating public discourse and narrowing avenues for informed debate.

“If we, as parliamentarians, do not intervene in this process, we are rapidly heading toward a world where the framework of democracy is narrowing,” Kurtulmuş cautioned.

He stressed the responsibility of lawmakers to protect democratic institutions and ensure that emerging digital ecosystems uphold transparency, accountability, and freedom of expression.

A Call for Parliamentary Engagement in Global Affairs

Kurtulmuş urged fellow parliamentarians to expand their role beyond national borders and actively engage with global challenges. He said domestic realities are increasingly shaped by geopolitical crises, economic injustice, and international diplomatic dynamics.

He called on global legislatures to adopt a vision rooted in peace, cooperation, and constructive dialogue, and to contribute to building a more equitable and stable world order.

“Parliaments must not be passive observers. We must rise to meet global challenges with unified resolve and shared purpose,” he concluded.

The 150th IPU Assembly has brought together parliamentary leaders and delegations from around the world to discuss pressing global issues and the role of democratic institutions in safeguarding peace, justice, and development.
