Türkiye Calls for Urgent Legal Measures to Safeguard Cyber Sovereignty

Türkiye

Istanbul, April 26, 2026 – The Europe Today: Türkiye must assert its sovereignty over cyberspace through urgent legal measures as the digital domain increasingly becomes a core element of national security, Communications Director Burhanettin Duran said on Friday.

Speaking at an event titled “Communication in the Century of Türkiye” in Istanbul, Duran highlighted intensifying global competition across political and social spheres, noting that countries worldwide now treat cyberspace as a strategic domain requiring sovereign control.

“Every country now views cyberspace as a domain of sovereignty and is taking measures accordingly,” he said, adding that Türkiye is obligated to reinforce its position through both recent and forthcoming legal regulations.

Duran warned that the country faces “multi-dimensional” challenges in the digital space, ranging from the protection of children online to the safeguarding of critical national capabilities and infrastructure.

“This is truly a multi-layered challenge, and urgent measures need to be taken,” he stressed.

He further pointed out that rapid digitalization has significantly enhanced the ability to shape public perception through algorithm-driven platforms. Social media, he noted, has increasingly been used as a tool of hybrid warfare by various countries in recent years, amplifying concerns over information security and influence operations.

The remarks underscore Türkiye’s growing focus on strengthening its legal and institutional framework to address emerging cyber threats and ensure national resilience in an evolving digital landscape.
