Dushanbe, April 29, 2026 – The Europe Today: Emomali Rahmon met with Sergio Gor on April 28 to discuss strengthening bilateral ties and advancing cooperation under the C5+1 framework, with a focus on trade, investment, security, and emerging technologies.
During the visit, Gor also held talks with Sirojiddin Muhriddin, emphasizing the importance of deepening U.S.-Tajikistan relations. In a statement shared on social media, the envoy expressed optimism about building a stronger partnership aimed at enhancing security and economic prosperity for both nations.
Focus on Investment and Economic Cooperation
According to Tajik officials, discussions with President Rahmon centered on expanding bilateral cooperation across key economic sectors. Rahmon highlighted that the United States ranks among Tajikistan’s top five investment partners and reaffirmed Dushanbe’s interest in strengthening ties through mechanisms such as the Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA).
Priority sectors identified for increased U.S. engagement include hydropower, mining, mineral processing, light industry, food production, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals. Tajikistan continues to promote its vast hydropower potential as a driver of regional energy trade and industrial development, while mining aligns with growing U.S. interest in critical minerals and diversified supply chains.
Digital and Technological Collaboration
Both sides also underscored opportunities in digital cooperation, particularly in artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure, and broader economic digitalization. Plans for joint ventures in agricultural processing and export-oriented production were also discussed as part of efforts to attract foreign investment.
Security and Regional Stability
Security cooperation remained a central theme of the talks. Tajikistan’s long and sensitive border with Afghanistan continues to pose challenges related to narcotics trafficking, militant activity, and cross-border threats. Officials stressed the need for coordinated efforts to combat terrorism, extremism, and drug smuggling.
Recent incidents, including clashes with alleged smugglers along the Afghan border, as well as past attacks affecting foreign workers, have heightened concerns about regional stability and investor confidence.
Expanding Partnership Beyond Security
In addition to economic and security discussions, the two countries are also enhancing cooperation in the health sector. Earlier this month, Washington and Dushanbe agreed on a five-year health initiative valued at approximately $38 million in U.S. assistance, alongside Tajikistan’s commitment to increase domestic health spending.
Gor’s visit reflects renewed U.S. engagement with Central Asia, focusing on strategic sectors such as energy, infrastructure, and digital transformation. For Tajikistan, the talks signal a broader effort to reposition itself—not only as a frontline security partner—but also as an emerging destination for investment in energy, industry, and technology.
The meeting underscores Dushanbe’s ambition to deepen economic partnerships and elevate its role in regional development while maintaining strong security cooperation with international partners.
