Azerbaijan Highlights Strategic Expansion of Middle Corridor as Key Global Connectivity Link

Azerbaijan

Washington, June 11, 2026 – The Europe Today: The Middle Corridor is evolving from a traditional transport route into a strategic geo-economic system connecting Europe, the South Caucasus, Central Asia, and regions beyond, according to Hikmet Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan and Head of the Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration.

Addressing the annual Trans-Caspian Forum via video link, Hajiyev said the corridor’s importance has increased significantly amid escalating conflicts in the Gulf region and the Middle East, underscoring its growing role in global trade and connectivity.

He noted that a key component of the Middle Corridor is the Baku–Tbilisi–Kars railway, which serves as a critical infrastructure link in East-West transportation networks.

Hajiyev also highlighted the importance of connectivity with Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan region, stating that the emerging Zangezur Corridor is increasingly viewed as a strategic segment of the broader Middle Corridor architecture.

He added that the Zangezur Corridor has the potential to strengthen East-West connectivity while enhancing Azerbaijan’s direct transport links with Türkiye and extending access to European markets.

According to Hajiyev, these developments reflect a broader transformation of the Middle Corridor into a comprehensive strategic framework aimed at improving regional integration, strengthening supply chain resilience, and expanding international trade routes across Eurasia.
