Tokyo, February 10, 2026 – The Europe Today: The death toll from prolonged heavy snowfall across Japan has risen to 46, while more than 550 people have sustained injuries, as severe winter conditions continue to batter large parts of the country.
According to media reports citing the Fire and Disaster Management Agency, persistent snowfall since late January has severely affected northern regions, burying communities and triggering widespread transportation disruptions, particularly in areas along the Sea of Japan coast.
Authorities said that many of the fatalities occurred when accumulated snow fell from rooftops or during snow-clearing operations, which have proven especially hazardous amid continuous heavy snowfall. In the northern city of Aomori, snow depth has reportedly reached approximately 1.3 meters, underscoring the severity of the situation.
Officials have urged residents to exercise extreme caution, warning of ongoing risks related to roof collapses and snow removal accidents. With harsh winter weather expected to persist, emergency services remain on high alert in the affected regions.
