Beijing, September 14, 2024 – The Europe Today: China’s lawmakers have officially adopted amendments to the Statistics Law, aiming to more effectively prevent and address data fraud. The decision was made during the 11th session of the Standing Committee of the 14th National People’s Congress (NPC), which concluded on Friday in Beijing.
The newly approved amendments are designed to enhance accountability in preventing and punishing statistics fraud, bolster statistical oversight, and improve the scientific accuracy and reliability of data collection and reporting.
Shi Hong, an official from the Legislative Affairs Commission of the NPC Standing Committee, emphasized that the amendments follow a problem-oriented approach. They aim to strengthen legal responsibilities for illegal actions, such as the manipulation or falsification of statistical data.
The changes also call for the establishment of a comprehensive, coordinated, efficient, authoritative, and reliable national statistics supervision system, according to Mao Shengyong, deputy director of the National Bureau of Statistics. The goal is to ensure more accurate and trustworthy data reporting, which is critical for policy-making and economic planning.
These amendments come as part of China’s broader efforts to enhance the integrity of its statistical systems and ensure the accurate collection and analysis of data for both domestic and international use.
