Morocco, UN Discuss Peacekeeping Cooperation and Global Security Priorities

Morocco

Rabat, June 9, 2026 – The Europe Today: Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, held talks with United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix in Rabat during the senior UN official’s second official visit to the Kingdom, focusing on Morocco’s contributions to international peacekeeping efforts and ongoing reforms within the UN system.

According to a statement issued by Morocco’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the meeting highlighted the Kingdom’s significant and exemplary role in United Nations peacekeeping operations, underscoring Morocco’s longstanding commitment to international peace and security.

The ministry noted that Morocco’s engagement in UN peacekeeping missions is guided by a strategic vision rooted in the country’s sustained participation in global peace and security initiatives since 1960. It added that Morocco is currently ranked ninth among the world’s largest contributors of troops to UN peacekeeping missions.

The discussions also reflected Morocco’s growing role in multilateral peace and security frameworks. The Kingdom currently chairs the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) for 2026 and serves as the coordinator of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) on peacekeeping issues, positions that the ministry said demonstrate the international community’s confidence in Morocco’s contributions to global stability.

Lacroix’s visit comes amid major reform initiatives launched by the United Nations Secretary-General, including the “UN 80” Initiative aimed at streamlining and modernizing the UN Secretariat, as well as a comprehensive strategic review of all UN peacekeeping operations.

The meeting reaffirmed continued coordination between Morocco and the United Nations on peacekeeping priorities and global security challenges, particularly at a time of significant institutional reform within the UN system.
