Santa Fe, New Mexico, February 27, 2025 – The Europe Today: Two-time Academy Award-winning actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were found dead in their home in New Mexico, according to the Santa Fe New Mexican on Thursday. The couple’s dog was also found deceased.
Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza confirmed their deaths, stating that there were no immediate signs of foul play. Local authorities have not yet provided further details.
Hackman, 95, was widely regarded as one of Hollywood’s most intense and versatile actors. He won Oscars for his performances in The French Connection (1971) and Unforgiven (1992). Over a career spanning more than four decades, he appeared in over 80 films, as well as on television and stage.
A former U.S. Marine, Hackman lived a private life in New Mexico following his retirement from acting. He married Arakawa, a pianist, in 1991. He was previously married and had three children.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
