Türkiye Begins First Natural Gas Exports to Syria via Kilis-Aleppo Pipeline

Ankara, August 2, 2025 – The Europe Today: Türkiye has officially commenced natural gas exports to Syria, marking a significant step in regional energy cooperation. The announcement was made by Türkiye’s Energy and Natural Resources Minister, Alparslan Bayraktar, during the inauguration of the Türkiye-Syria natural gas pipeline on Saturday.

Bayraktar confirmed that natural gas originating from Azerbaijan will be transported to Syria through Kilis, a Turkish city near the Syrian border. The connection between Kilis and Aleppo was completed on May 21 following the restoration of damaged pipeline infrastructure.

According to Minister Bayraktar, the new pipeline has the capacity to deliver up to 2 billion cubic meters (BCM) of natural gas annually to Syria. This volume is expected to generate enough electricity to power approximately 5 million households.

Bayraktar also highlighted that Türkiye’s electricity exports to Syria are currently conducted through eight separate transmission points. The capacity of these lines is set to increase by 25% in the near term, with plans for further expansion to more than double the current capacity.

Syria’s energy infrastructure, including power generation facilities, transmission lines, and natural gas systems, sustained severe damage during the civil war that erupted in 2011. As a result, many regions were left with just 3–4 hours of electricity per day.

Following the collapse of the Baath regime in December 2024, Syria entered a transitional period with the reconstruction of critical infrastructure identified as a national priority. Türkiye, leveraging its technical expertise and geographic proximity, has been actively involved in supporting the rebuilding of Syria’s energy systems.

Prior to this development, Türkiye had supplied limited amounts of electricity to northern Syria, occasionally assisting with regional distribution through cross-border transmission lines. The launch of this new pipeline marks a major expansion of Türkiye’s role in Syria’s energy recovery efforts.
