Ganja, September 28, 2025 – The Europe Today: The solemn opening ceremony of the 3rd Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) Games was held on Saturday in Ganja, with the participation of President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva.
The ceremony commenced with the raising of the tricolor flag of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the performance of the national anthem, followed by a ceremonial parade featuring athletes from the participating countries.
Azerbaijan’s flag was carried into the arena by karate fighter Asiman Gurbanli and taekwondo athlete Zemfira Hasanzade, symbolizing the nation’s sporting pride.
Samir Sharifov, Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the 3rd CIS Games, and Nurlan Seitimov, Deputy Secretary General of the CIS, addressed the gathering with opening speeches, highlighting the significance of the event in fostering unity and sportsmanship among member states.
The athletes and their coaches then took part in a swearing-in ceremony, pledging to uphold the values of fair play and integrity throughout the Games.
President Ilham Aliyev officially declared the 3rd CIS Games open, marking the formal beginning of the competitions.
The ceremony concluded with an artistic performance that showcased Azerbaijan’s rich cultural heritage, adding a festive atmosphere to the grand occasion.
