Rabat, July 15, 2026 – The Europe Today: Morocco’s aquaculture sector has grown to 244 active projects with a combined target production capacity of approximately 90,000 tons annually, according to the National Agency for the Development of Aquaculture (ANDA), underscoring the country’s commitment to strengthening its blue economy and sustainable marine development.

The figures were presented during the 27th session of ANDA’s Board of Directors, held in Rabat under the chairmanship of Secretary of State for Maritime Fisheries Zakia Driouich. The meeting reviewed the agency’s achievements during the 2025 financial year, assessed progress on key structural projects, and outlined future priorities for the sector.

Opening the session, Driouich said Morocco has made the sustainable development of marine resources and the blue economy a national strategic priority under the leadership of King Mohammed VI. She described aquaculture as a cornerstone of the Halieutis Strategy, highlighting its role in diversifying fisheries production, enhancing food security, promoting the sustainable use of marine resources, attracting investment, and supporting the socio-economic development of coastal communities.

In a statement, ANDA said the aquaculture sector is expected to play an increasingly significant role in consolidating Morocco’s blue economy, strengthening food sovereignty, and creating sustainable employment opportunities.

The Board also reviewed progress in reinforcing the national aquaculture value chain. According to the agency, the continued expansion of domestic hatcheries is helping secure a stable supply of aquaculture seeds, a critical factor in increasing production capacity. Simultaneously, investments in processing and value-added facilities are improving product quality, enhancing competitiveness, and increasing returns for producers.

Board members welcomed a series of government measures aimed at improving the sector’s competitiveness, including support for strategic production inputs, initiatives to facilitate investment, and enhanced assistance for project developers to create a more business-friendly environment.

ANDA also highlighted growing international cooperation with key development partners, including the World Bank, the Islamic Development Bank, and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). These partnerships are contributing to the sector through technical assistance, capacity-building initiatives, innovation, and the mobilization of new investments.

As part of Morocco’s broader public governance reforms, the Board reviewed reports from its specialised committees on governance, strategy and investment, and auditing.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the Board approved ANDA’s 2025 Activity Report and financial statements. The accounts were certified without reservation by the external auditor, reflecting what the agency described as its strong governance standards and sound financial management.
