Hanoi, August 8, 2026 – The Europe Today: Parliamentary cooperation is playing a key role in strengthening political trust and advancing the comprehensive strategic partnership between Viet Nam and Thailand, Party General Secretary and President Tô Lâm said during a meeting with President of the National Assembly and Speaker of the House of Representatives of Thailand Sophon Zaram in Hà Nội on Friday.
Welcoming the positive development of bilateral relations across multiple sectors, Tô Lâm highlighted the important contribution of the Thai legislature to strengthening ties between the two countries.
He called for greater political trust through regular high-level visits and exchanges at all levels, while urging both sides to effectively implement the Action Plan for the Viet Nam–Thailand Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for 2026–2031.
Tô Lâm also expressed his hope that King Maha Vajiralongkorn and Queen Suthida of Thailand would visit Viet Nam in the near future.
Sophon Zaram conveyed greetings and best wishes from the Thai King, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and other Thai leaders to Tô Lâm and Viet Nam’s senior leadership. He congratulated Viet Nam on its notable development achievements and commended its growing regional and international stature.
The Thai parliamentary leader also expressed Thailand’s interest in learning from Viet Nam’s experience in streamlining and improving the efficiency of its state apparatus.
Sophon Zaram reaffirmed Thailand’s strong commitment to its Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with Viet Nam, noting that the two countries share longstanding friendship, common strategic interests and considerable potential for expanded cooperation.
He expressed a desire to further broaden bilateral collaboration, particularly in economy, trade, education and tourism, while praising the close cooperation between the two countries’ legislatures.
He said Thailand’s National Assembly would continue working closely with Viet Nam’s National Assembly to strengthen bilateral and multilateral parliamentary cooperation, including the exchange of experience in legislation, oversight and decision-making on major national issues.
The two sides agreed to enhance defence and security cooperation, strengthen coordination in combating transnational crime and accelerate the implementation of the “Three Connects” strategy.
They also agreed to advance joint programmes and projects aimed at improving connectivity between the two economies, promoting balanced and sustainable trade and achieving a bilateral trade turnover target of US$25 billion, with a longer-term ambition of reaching US$50 billion, in line with the understanding reached by the leaders of both countries.
Sophon Zaram expressed appreciation for Viet Nam’s support and the favourable conditions provided to Thai companies investing and operating in the country. Both sides agreed to continue facilitating investment and encouraging businesses from each country to expand their operations in the other.
Tô Lâm also underscored the important bridging role of the Vietnamese community in Thailand and called on the Thai legislature and relevant authorities to continue supporting the community so that its members can maintain stable lives and contribute further to friendship between the two peoples.
He further proposed strengthening relations between the Communist Party of Viet Nam and Thailand’s Bhumjaithai Party to broaden the political foundation for stable and long-term bilateral cooperation.
The two leaders agreed to maintain close coordination through regional and international mechanisms, particularly ASEAN, Mekong subregional frameworks and the United Nations, with the aim of advancing the interests of both peoples and contributing to peace, stability, cooperation and development across the region.
