Medvedev Predicts Strikes on Newly Opened Rheinmetall Weapons Facility in Ukraine

Moscow, October 27, 2024 — The Europe Today: Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has suggested that Russia may target Rheinmetall’s recently completed weapons manufacturing plant in Ukraine. The plant, constructed as part of a joint venture between the German defense giant and Ukraine’s state-owned defense group Ukroboronprom, was built to support Ukraine’s military efforts and is the first of four planned facilities on Ukrainian soil.

Rheinmetall, Germany’s largest arms manufacturer, has confirmed that the facility is operational and is dedicated to producing artillery ammunition, armored vehicles, and air-defense systems. According to Rheinmetall’s CEO, Armin Papperger, this plant marks the first step in what he describes as “a productive partnership” with the Ukrainian defense industry.

Medvedev, currently Deputy Head of Russia’s Security Council, responded to the announcement with a pointed remark. He referenced the factory as a “legitimate target” and posted on X (formerly Twitter) and Telegram, hinting at the possibility of a “Russian fireworks display” on the site.

Rheinmetall has seen significant financial gains amid the ongoing conflict, reporting a doubling of its operating profit in the first half of 2024 and projecting orders totaling €60 billion ($64.8 billion) by the year’s end. Moscow has criticized such Western support for Ukraine, arguing it sustains the military-industrial complex while escalating the conflict.
