Ashgabat, August 11, 2026 – The Europe Today: A commercial flow of natural gas has been recorded at the Magtymguly field in Turkmenistan’s sector of the Caspian Sea following the successful drilling of appraisal and production well A8, highlighting the field’s significant hydrocarbon potential.
According to Turkmenistan newspaper, the well was drilled to a depth of 4,981 metres and tested at a production rate of more than 1.3 million cubic metres of natural gas per day, along with approximately 130 tonnes of gas condensate.
Well A8 is located within Block 1, operated by Malaysia’s PETRONAS Çarigali in partnership with state-owned Turkmennebit (Turkmen Oil) under a production-sharing agreement (PSA).
Initial development work at the well is currently under way, with production expected to increase as the facility transitions to full-scale operations.
The results of the drilling and testing programme underscore the hydrocarbon potential of the Magtymguly field and could contribute to further growth in upstream production in Turkmenistan’s Caspian offshore sector.
Three Decades of Turkmenistan-PETRONAS Cooperation
Offshore hydrocarbon development has remained a key area of long-standing cooperation between Turkmenistan and PETRONAS. The two countries are marking 30 years of strategic partnership in the oil and gas sector in 2026.
Over the past three decades, the partnership has contributed to the development of substantial production infrastructure in Turkmenistan’s Caspian offshore and coastal areas. Five modern offshore platforms have been installed, while approximately 40 exploration, appraisal and production wells have been drilled.
Joint projects undertaken within the framework of the partnership have resulted in the production of more than 44 billion cubic metres of natural gas and 16 million tonnes of liquid hydrocarbons.
The cooperation has also supported the development of key facilities on the Turkmen coast, including a gas processing plant, a coastal gas terminal and facilities for assembling offshore structures.
Further Development of Turkmenistan’s Caspian Resources
The next stage of cooperation envisages expanding exploration and development activities across additional areas of Turkmenistan’s Caspian sector.
Development work is planned for offshore Blocks 19 and 20, while 2D seismic surveys are scheduled for Blocks 11, 12, 13 and 14. The surveys are expected to provide additional geological data and help assess the resource potential of these areas.
New production-sharing agreements, agreements covering seismic surveys and a long-term framework agreement on hydrocarbon development are expected to provide a foundation for further expanding PETRONAS’ activities in Turkmenistan’s Caspian offshore sector.
The successful drilling and testing of well A8 at the Magtymguly field represents another significant milestone in the Turkmenistan-PETRONAS partnership and highlights the considerable potential for continued development of the country’s offshore hydrocarbon resources.
