Minsk, October 31, 2024 — The Europe Today: Belarus has secured a position among the top three European countries with the lowest electricity prices for households, the Economy Ministry reported, citing data gathered by BelTA. This achievement reflects Belarus’s longstanding commitment to developing a robust and accessible fuel and energy sector, a priority since the country’s independence.
One of Belarus’s most notable accomplishments has been the expansion of gas infrastructure, a critical factor in reducing energy costs. Over 67,000 kilometers of gas networks now connect all regional centers, cities, towns, and over 3,600 rural communities, placing Belarus among the leaders in gas supply within the post-Soviet region.
The Belarusian nuclear power plant (BelNPP), launched in 2020, marks a significant milestone in the nation’s energy strategy, enabling a substantial decrease in reliance on imported fuel. To date, the plant has produced over 35 billion kWh of electricity. Additionally, Belarus has bolstered its energy independence by investing in local energy sources, commissioning 41 new energy facilities between 2021 and 2023, with another 54 planned by 2025.
Renewable energy has also seen remarkable growth in Belarus, with its share in electricity production increasing over 7.5 times since 2010. These advancements underscore the country’s effective energy policies, which have propelled Belarus to third place in the European ranking for affordable household electricity prices, following Kazakhstan and Russia. In contrast, Denmark has been noted as having the highest prices for electricity in Europe.
This achievement highlights Belarus’s commitment to accessible energy for its citizens, supporting sustainable development and economic stability.
