Langkawi, January 20, 2025 – The Europe Today: The Indonesian government reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 during the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Retreat (AMM Retreat) held in Langkawi, Malaysia, on Sunday.
In a statement released by Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Minister Sugiono underscored the importance of the vision, which is set to be ratified under Malaysia’s chairmanship this year.
“This vision is vital to realizing ASEAN as a strong, dynamic, and resilient region over the next 20 years,” Sugiono stated, highlighting its alignment with President Prabowo Subianto’s Asta Cita (Eight Missions), which emphasize inclusive and sustainable development to benefit the community.
Strengthening ASEAN Capacity
Sugiono stressed the need to enhance ASEAN’s institutional capacity and resources to achieve the vision. He highlighted the interconnected nature of global challenges and the necessity for comprehensive regional cooperation to address them.
“Solving these challenges in isolation is no longer possible,” he noted, emphasizing the importance of ASEAN unity and its proactive role in ensuring regional stability amidst intensifying geopolitical competition.
He expressed Indonesia’s support for strengthening ASEAN mechanisms such as the ASEAN Regional Forum, East Asia Forum, and the ASEAN Institute for Peace and Reconciliation (AIPR). Respect for regional principles, including the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation and the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific, was also deemed crucial for maintaining stability.
Focus on Myanmar and Global Developments
Sugiono urged ASEAN to intensify efforts to resolve the crisis in Myanmar, reiterating Indonesia’s full support for the special envoy of the ASEAN Chair in implementing the Five-Point Consensus.
Addressing recent global developments, he welcomed the Gaza ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel, calling for its immediate and comprehensive implementation to prevent further casualties and promote peace in Palestine.
Sugiono reiterated Indonesia’s stance on the Palestine issue, emphasizing that lasting peace can only be achieved through the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state.
“We must continue to call for the resumption of the peace process towards a two-state solution based on agreed international parameters,” he affirmed.
Commitment to Regional Stability and Prosperity
The AMM Retreat highlighted Indonesia’s dedication to ensuring ASEAN remains a cohesive and proactive force in addressing regional and global challenges, contributing to a future of shared prosperity and resilience.
