Ashgabat, July 29, 2026 – The Europe Today: President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov on Tuesday held talks with Odile Renaud-Basso, President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), reaffirming the two sides’ commitment to expanding cooperation in key sectors including energy, transport, digital economy, environmental protection, banking and sustainable development.
Welcoming the head of the EBRD to Ashgabat, President Berdimuhamedov expressed confidence that the meetings scheduled during her visit would provide fresh momentum to the long-standing partnership between Turkmenistan and the international financial institution.
Odile Renaud-Basso thanked the President for the warm reception and praised Turkmenistan’s rapid socio-economic development under his leadership. She also expressed admiration for the architectural beauty of Ashgabat and commended the country’s extensive reforms aimed at diversifying the national economy.
She reaffirmed the EBRD’s continued interest in strengthening cooperation with Turkmenistan and supporting the country’s development priorities.
During the meeting, President Berdimuhamedov highlighted that Turkmenistan maintains constructive relations with leading international organizations, particularly financial and banking institutions, as part of its foreign policy. He noted that the country’s socio-economic strategy is focused on improving the quality of life of its people while ensuring long-term sustainable development.
The President said Turkmenistan is actively promoting export-oriented and import-substituting industries, encouraging private sector development, modernizing the national economy and attracting investment into strategic sectors.
He emphasized that Turkmenistan’s longstanding partnership with the EBRD has yielded effective cooperation in trade, finance and banking, identifying energy, transport, the digital economy and environmental protection as priority areas for future collaboration.
Highlighting the country’s strategic geographical position, President Berdimuhamedov said Turkmenistan serves as a key platform for enhancing regional and international connectivity. He underscored ongoing efforts to develop multimodal international transport corridors linking North-South and East-West routes.
The President also stressed the importance of expanding cooperation in the energy sector through diversification and the development of clean and environmentally friendly energy projects, noting that significant opportunities exist for the EBRD to participate in major investment initiatives across the country.
Agriculture and the efficient management of water resources were also identified as important areas for future collaboration. President Berdimuhamedov reaffirmed Turkmenistan’s readiness to work closely with the EBRD in advancing sustainable agricultural development and rational water use.
He noted that discussions during the EBRD President’s visit would cover banking, finance, energy, environmental protection, water resource management, and the development of Turkmenistan’s transport and logistics infrastructure, expressing confidence that the talks would elevate bilateral cooperation to a new level.
At the conclusion of the meeting, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov and Odile Renaud-Basso reaffirmed their shared commitment to strengthening mutually beneficial cooperation between Turkmenistan and the EBRD and exchanged best wishes for the continued success of the partnership.
